It is our pleasure to extend you
a hearty welcome to the EDC Website.
We know that a disaster occurs
when a hazard impacts on vulnerable people.
The combination of hazards,
vulnerability and inability to reduce the potential negative
consequences of risk results in a disaster. Though often
caused by nature, disasters can have human origins as well.
The disasters in different forms, like flood, earthquake,
cyclone etc., devastate society and economy all over the
world.
The main campus of the King
Abdulaziz University (KAU) is located in the city of Jeddah
lying on the west coast of Saudi Arabia. As the city is
close to the proximity of the sea, it is affected by high
temperatures and humidity in summer with temperatures rising
to over 45ºC. Jeddah borders a number of hills that are
parallel to Al-Sarawat Mountains from the east. Hence during
rains, the water from the mountains flows to the Red Sea
through Jeddah causing flash floods. In November 2009 and in
January 2011, Jeddah has experienced a huge downpour leading
to substantial flooding in a matter of a few hours with
far-reaching consequences. The KAU campus was also severely
affected in these floods, particularly in the year 2009.
This region is also vulnerable to many other natural
disasters including volcanic activities, escarpment, earth
fissures, salt dome and coastal erosion. Hence it is of
paramount importance for the University to be ready in
dealing with the impact of such disasters to minimize the
consequent damages and causalities.
From this perspective, KAU has
formed a Committee of Emergencies and Disaster Management in
the year 2010. Considering the geographic location of the
university and also the vulnerability of various potential
disasters in the region, the University has taken
initiatives to extend the scope of this Committee which has
lead to the establishment of this Emergency and Disaster
Center (EDC).
